FanboysBeing that I’m a huge Star Wars geek and have actually been to Skywalker Ranch, Big Rock Ranch, the old LucasArts and ILM buildings, and the Letterman Digital Arts Center, I’ve been anxiously awaiting the release of Fanboys. After all the drama and delays (the film was supposed to be released in 2007) the film finally has a release date (February 6, 2009) and trailer.

Star Wars + a bunch of cameos + Kristen Bell = GREAT MOVIE

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (Xbox 360)

Play as Vader’s Apprentice, get bogged down in some repetitive gameplay.

So I read the comic a few weeks back and then subsequently purchased the game.  If you want a game summary, read the review on the comic.  It’s essentially the same thing.  This review is about the game itself.

The Force Unleashed is just that, you with the Force.  It’s a no holds barred affair of which you’re in command of the entire range of Force powers.  If you ever wanted to be a Jedi, this is the game for you.  Run, jump, blast people away.  It’s all there in spades.  And this is where the fun ends.

By now, I’m sure you’ve all seen the famous cut scene where you pull a Star Destroyer out of the sky.  Sounds great, right?  Unbridled power.  Ultimate control.  Well, this little show of the Force will cost you about 15 minutes of your life playing a tedious mini-game where you make slight tweaks of the thumbsticks to get the Star Destroyer out of the sky whilst dodging squadrons of TIE-Fighters.  You do this over and over and over again until you get it right.

Without giving too much away, the repetitiveness continues in a fight with a fan favorite as the combo of hitting the B button followed by the A button about 10 times in a row brings you victory…and renders you brain dead.

Maybe my expectations were too high.  But should we expect more out of a game that took about 2 years to get made?

Funny thing is as tedious and repetitive that those parts of the game were, there were other parts that were just impossibly and unjustifiably difficult.  Why are three souped up storm troopers more difficult to defeat than a Jedi Master?  It just makes no sense.

The graphics were on par with other next-gen game and the sound effects are what we’ve come to expect from LucasArts.  Unfortunately it does not mask the game’s base deficiencies.

If you want to play a good Star Wars game, play Knights of the Old Republic…the original, not part deux.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (Comic Book)

Summary: Vader’s Apprentice hunts Jedi…all hell breaks loose.

I have been sitting on the sidelines and haven’t actually played the highly anticipated game SW:The Force Unleashed while my TV was getting fixed.  In the meantime, I decided to tide myself over by reading the comic book.

The story takes place between Episode III, the Revenge of the SIth, and Episode IV, A New Hope.  It revolves around Darth Vader’s Secret Apprentice, Starkiller, and his quest to find his place between the Dark and Light.  Add in a touch of political intrigue, some familiar faces, and the story of the birth of the Rebel Alliance and you’ve got the formula for a hit.  The comic book doesn’t disappoint and I’m definitely looking forward to playing to game.

Rating: 4 out of 5 lightsabers.
